HEINOUSNESS OF SIN

The sin of presumption is, according to Manton, “an implicit blasphemy” (Num. 15:30; Ezek. 20:27). He warned, “There is a blasphemy included in it, as if God were an ignorant God, and did not know [the sinner’s] wickedness; or a careless God, that would not take notice of it; or an impotent God, that could not punish his rebellion; or an unjust God, that would not.”7 What are we saying about God and His majesty when we willfully sin against Him? What are we saying about His attributes? Presumptuous sins chop Him up into pieces and take His love, mercy, and grace away from His other attributes such as knowledge, justice, power, and holiness.

In the presumptuous sinner exists, added Manton, “the highest pride in it that a creature can be capable of.”8 David sinned presumptuously in the examples of Bathsheba and Uriah. He took for himself what did not belong to him in his act of adultery and murder. He knew taking another man’s wife and then his life was evil, but his pride gave him what he would deny to other men. In so doing, David despised God’s word (2 Sam. 12:9). His sin of pride, which manifested itself in adultery and murder, meant the sword would never depart from his house (v.10). Despising God, an act of pride, always has consequences, and they can involve great loss physically and/or spiritually, even when the Father disciplines His children in tender love.

The Christian spends much time in the Word of God and in corporate worship being fed by teachers of the Word. Christians receive truth upon truth from God. They move from immaturity to maturity in their knowledge of the Lord. They experience God’s power and grace. Then, to willfully sin in presumption not only tramples these heavenly gifts but also despises the gracious Lord who gave them.
