Q Can you train a horse to stand still without being tied up?
A Ground tying is important to ranchers and cowboys when they need to dismount in open country to repair a fence or carry out other tasks. A properly trained horse will stand without being attached to anything as long as the reins are dropped to the ground. The training process begins with tying the horse to an object so that he must remain on the spot. As training progresses, the trainer drops the reins to the ground and steps away from the horse, remaining close enough to grab the reins and give a verbal whoa if the horse seeks to move.
