In the morning, I begin to wake up and notice that Harlow is still in my arms. Neither of us says a word until light peers through my floor-to-ceiling window. I prop myself up and bend my chin down to kiss the top of her soft hair. Harlow’s eyes are fixated on me. She looks like starlight and hope, all wrapped up in the flesh of a single person. What I should do at this moment, is get up, get dressed, and have a car come pick her up to take her home and never touch her again. Instead, I whisper “Stay,” as I stare into her eyes. “Have coffee with me this morning.”

While we lounge on the loveseat, she peers over the rim of her coffee cup and asks, “What were your men talking about last night? Mira told me you’re engaged, your men made it sounds more like a business deal than a marriage.”

I sigh, wondering whether I should divulge this information to her or not, but realizing that at this point it doesn’t really matter. I’ve already sunk both my personal details and my cock into this woman. She could really hurt me if she wanted to, but I doubt that being a snitch is the way she’d do it. Harlow has a much deeper hold on me than she realizes. Still, she knows I could end her life with a snap of my fingers if it came down to it Not that I would. “Do you remember the model on the first day of fashion week?” I ask her.

“The dead one? The one you killed?”

I shake off her tone and simply answer the question. “Yes. It turns out that particular hit caused a bit of a hiccup. He was actually the bastard son of the Irish Mob boss, which we didn’t realize, and it put me in a bit of a predicament. I decided to be engaged to the daughter of the capo of another Italian crime family, as a way of preparing for a possible war. My marriage to her is strictly business. The arrangement will ensure that my borgata remains in a dominant position so that the Irish Mob can’t cause me any problems.”

“So you’re getting married to a woman you don’t love?” she asks, as if we’re still starry-eyed children who believe in happily-ever-afters.

“Yes,” I say simply. “That’s how it’s done.”

Harlow frowns, and I want to lick the pout right off of her mouth. “There must be another way,” she insists, as if she has any idea how things in the mafia actually work. It’s naïve but cute that she doesn’t want to share me.

“There’s a lot beneath the surface you don’t know about, which endangers my position of power,” I try to explain without getting into the gritty details. She simply isn’t ready to know about it all.
