Chapter 23

I wish I could say I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I walked into my penthouse and saw Katya walk out of the kitchen with a drink in her hand. Unfortunately, I more than believed it. As much as I would have hoped I’d made it clear to her I didn’t want anything to do with her and was definitely not interested in being the soft place she landed after getting kicked in the ass by a taste of her own medicine, I knew her better than that. Telling her she wasn’t welcome to come to my place and stay with me wouldn’t deter her. If anything, it would make her more determined to dig her heels into the ground and get what she wanted. She believed what she wanted was all that mattered in the world, and if someone disagreed with her, it was only because they hadn’t seen the light yet. They just needed some convincing.

I probably knew that better than anyone. I was on the receiving end of plenty of her ‘convincing’ in the years we’d spent together. Showing up at my house was a clear message I had no choice but to help her. She would do anything it took to wedge herself back into my life, including getting in the way of Bridget and me. To her, I was in a perpetual holding pattern. She drifted off into her own life when it was convenient for her, but now that that was over, she wanted me to fall back on. I was her property, and she would use me any way she saw fit. The thought disgusted me, and rage rushed up inside me as soon as soon as I saw her.

Bridgit and I were wrapped up in each other, laughing and happy as we kissed and tumbled through the door into the penthouse. I had every intention of stripping off her clothes right there and starting a naked tour of the every room of the house, but before I could even fully process the pile of luggage sitting in the middle of the living room, Katya walked into view. She stepped into the room like she belonged there, casually sipping a drink and staring at us with a smug smile on her lips.

“Took you long enough to get home.”

Before I could say or do anything, Bridgit pulled away from me and took off back through the door. I reached for her, trying to grab her and stop her, but she slipped away from me.

“Bridgit, stop,” I called as I ran after her. “Let me talk to you.”

“Leave me alone,” she said just before stepping into the elevator and smashing the button to close the door behind her.

I wanted to chase after her, but there was no way I was leaving my ex-wife in my apartment alone. I stomped back and slammed the door hard behind me. Katya was laughing, shaking her head as she continued to drink.

“Really, Andrei?” she asked. “Wasn’t that your secretary?”

“What the fuck are you doing here, Katya?” I demanded.
