Nessa kept walking, hands reaching out to take the amulet.

Demelza threw the Frisbee. It bounced off Nessa’s forehead. She didn’t even seem to notice. Demelza reached back into her bag and began frantically throwing more of the contents at Nessa.

A handful of novelty erasers bounced off her chest.

A tiny ugly plastic doll with crazy green hair skimmed her knee.

Three rubber bouncy balls ricocheted off her shoulder.

Two water balloons exploded on her head—still, Nessa kept coming.

The top of the tor was perilous with the stones from the destroyed cairn. Demelza slipped and slid on them as she danced away from Nessa who seemed fully under the influence of the curse.

Finally out of things to throw, Demelza threw the bag itself, then looked around for something else. All she could see were stones and she couldn’t throw stones at Nessa, no matter how cursed her friend was.

“Nessa, please, stop!” Demelza begged, as she realized she was being forced toward the cliff edge. Stones dropped down behind her, clacking against the quarry walls on their long journey to the ground.

“THE AMULET,” repeated Nessa, arms outstretched as Demelza teetered on the edge of the cliff, heart pounding as the sound of the stones hitting the ground echoing back up to them.

“NO!” Demelza shouted as Nessa lunged at her. She held out the hand on which she wore the Game Gauntlet, trying to keep Nessa at arm’s length.

The second Nessa walked into the gauntlet, she flew backward through the air, landing on the stony ground with a thud. Demelza sprang away from the cliff edge and crept cautiously over to Nessa. There was a quiet hiss, like air rushing out of a beach ball, as the foul-smelling mist drifted from Nessa’s mouth and ears.

“Nessa?” whispered Demelza.

There was no response. Demelza hoisted up the Staff of Truth with a grunt and poked Nessa’s stomach with the end of it.

“Grruuunnnghh.” Nessa opened her eyes and blinked as though she’d been asleep for hours. She sat up and rubbed her grazed elbows. “What happened?”

“You went bonkers is what happened! You was after the amulet and tried to push me off the edge of the cliff. Then my Game Gauntlet touched you, and you went flying. Then smoky stuff poured out your ears! I think it got you when you touched the plinth, cuz it was put there by the knights.”

“What got me?” said Nessa, looking around groggily.

“I think it was the curse!” said Demelza. “I bet that’s what made the digger and the statue go loopy too. Remember the stink when the digger threw up the amulet? Then again when we cleaned it with my glove? I thought it came from you, so I didn’t say anything, but, when I touched the Staff of Truth for the first time, I smelt it and saw the mist again. It came out of the knight when you magnetificated it and drove Madern’s dogs crazy. The same stinky mist came from the plinth when you touched it and came out of your ears after my glove touched you…”

“Urgh,” said Nessa.
