“Where are the good entertainers?” I asked.

Grace waved her long, sharp, evil fingernails at me.

“Are you insulting my party?” she asked.

I shook my head. Then I put my hands over my face to try to protect it.

Grace pointed to a woman in a long white coat. “That’s the face painter.”

I walked over to her. Laurie Schneider was getting her face painted with a pink butterfly like Grace’s. A line of girls waited behind her. A group of boys stood nearby.

“Don’t you guys want a turn with the face painter?” I asked the boys.

“The only thing she’s painting is pink butterflies. Yuck,” Rudy Morse said.

“Yuck,” I repeated.

Then a man in a black cape announced, “I am Morlon the Magnificent. My magic show is starting.”

Finally, a good entertainer. We all sat on the lawn to watch the show.

Morlon waved a plastic wand and held up a deck of cards. He pointed to Grace and said, “Name a card.”

“I like diamonds because they’re almost as sharp as my nails,” she said. “And I like queens because I always act like a queen. So I choose the queen of diamonds.”

Morlon waved his wand again. Then he threw all the cards on the ground and said, “Ta-da! Your queen of diamonds is in there somewhere.”

Everyone groaned.
