Chapter Sixteen
Noelle
* * *
Iâd never had as much fun as I was having tonight with Remy. We skated for what felt like forever, going fast, slowing down, holding hands, talking and laughing like weâd known each other forever instead of a little over a week. I was falling hard and fast, which was one of the more ridiculous things Iâd ever done, but the last couple of years hadnât been kind to me. My life could be summed up with the saying âif it wasnât for bad luck, Iâd have no luck at all.â
Remy breathed new life into me. Iâd never been the type of woman who thought she needed a man to save her, but when I was with him, I didnât need saving. Iâd never met anyone like him; gorgeous, famous, successful, hard-working, and more than anything else, kind. Thoughtful. Gentle. Iâd even go so far as to describe him as loving. Iâd had very little of any of that in my life and spent most of it kicking and clawing my way to survive. With Remy, I didnât have to do anything but live.
For the first time in my twenty-seven years on earth, I felt alive.
âWhen weâre done here, you want to get a late dinner?â he asked me when we finally sat down to take a break.
I shook my head.
âNo?â He seemed confused.
âLetâs get takeout and go to bed.â
âI like the way you think.â He leaned over to kiss me and my mouth opened of its own volition. I couldnât help myself when we were together. No one had ever made me feel so beautiful. So desirable. So happy.
Happy wasnât a word I used often, but it had been a constant since Remy had arrived in Garland Grove.
I leaned against his side and he slid his arm around me, pulling me closer. He radiated heat and I soaked it in. I was so used to being cold, or at least chilly, that heat was a luxury. It was addictive and a little scary.
âYou two are adorable,â Tandy said, sinking down beside me. âBut itâs time to get everyone out of here, clean up, and go home.â
âI think it was the busiest one yet,â I said, looking around.
She nodded. âOver three hundred people showed up.â
âLast year we topped out at one-ninety,â I said. âSo thatâs a good increase.â
âBut how much did we spend on hot chocolate and popcorn?â Remy asked.
âI know how many packages of cocoa I used,â I said. âBut Iâll need to check inventory for the amount of popcorn. Then weâll get a number. But we absolutely broke even, and this isnât about making money; itâs about the holidays and community fellowship and goodwill.â
âThatâs all well and good,â Remy said, âbut this is a business. Sure, we can do something like this once or twice a year for all those reasons, but the rest of the year, it needs to be about profit.â
âIs the rink profitable?â Tandy asked curiously.
âIâve been looking at the numbers, and it is, but money seems to just disappear.
