Chapter Six
“You can do it. I know you can,” Bowie urged.
He rubbed Kit’s sweat-soaked back. They had decided to have him start on all fours, thinking that might be easier for him to get into Tiger mood. So far, it hadn’t been working. For, try as Kit might, and Bowie could tell that Kit really was trying, they had yet to get any results.
A loud roar, followed by Riley saying, “Whoa there, buddy. You don’t need to bite me. You’re still half human, even in your animal form. So play nice.”
Bowie let out a sigh. It was good to know that at least somebody was having success. He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. He didn’t know how to get Kit to let down his guard enough to allow his Tiger to come through. Bowie had tried everything in his bag of tricks and came up with nada.
“He’s still fighting it too hard. He needs to just let it wash over him,” a voice from above said.
Bowie looked up at a larger stack of mats and saw Shane standing there. Usually, Bowie was a little creeped out whenever he saw the assassin, but this time, Bowie was relieved. Maybe Shane would have some tips for them that would finally be of help to Kit.
Shane jumped down from the mats, landing in one fluid motion. Bowie noticed the way Kit’s eyes grew wide at the sight of Shane. Not that Bowie blamed Kit. For while Shane might look small and innocent at first, that was all a façade. Underneath all that was a stone-cold killer. Shane had the hood of his black cloak up to hide his slightly curly brown hair, but his big doe eyes were giving off that hard stare of his.
“Let me guess, your first shift didn’t go so well?” Shane asked Kit.
Kit shook his head. “Up until that point, I thought I was a human.”
“Poor baby. Even though my master knew I was a shifter, he still whipped me through my entire first shift, just for shits and giggles, but you don’t see me whining about it, do you?”
Kit gave Shane an are-you-real look. “Why would your master do that?”
Shane gave a slight tilt of his head. “Because he wanted to. He didn’t need any other answer than that. See, unlike you, I was one of the Lost Shifters who ended up in the slave trade market. So my life wasn’t all milk and cookies. You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t feel bad for you not having a good first shift. You have a coach here now, so do it already and get it over with. Stop being such a pansy.”
Bowie thought Shane was being a bit too harsh on Kit. He even stepped forward to say so. But all of the sudden, there was a glow, and then in a flash, Kit had shifted into his Tiger form. The Tiger lunged out at Shane. Shane let out a laugh as he took a couple of steps back.
