California settlers raised a homemade flag on June 14, 1846, depicting a bear, a red star, and the words, “California Republic.”

The war appeared to be over. In September, Frémont ordered Kit to carry reports to Washington. Kit’s mission ended near Socorro, New Mexico. There he met General Stephen Kearny, who was leading an army overland to California. He was outraged when Kit told him the fighting was over. To hasten his advance, he ordered Kit to serve as his guide. Because Kearny outranked Frémont, Kit had no choice. He gave the reports to another rider to carry eastward.

Two months later, Kearny’s advance force limped into California. The 120 men set up camp near Warner’s Ranch, 60 miles northeast of San Diego. Word came that the Californios had retaken Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Kearny sensed that this was his chance for glory.

On December 6, army scouts spotted Captain Andrés Pico and eighty horsemen near San Pasquale. Without consulting Kit, the headstrong Kearny ordered a charge. The Californios, who rode better horses, simply galloped away. Urged on by Kearny, the forty Americans chased them. Kit’s horse stumbled, throwing him to the ground. He escaped being trampled, but his rifle was broken in the fall. He picked up a dead man’s gun and mounted a stray horse.
