Chapter 15

JJ stood in the small AV room at the rear of the Archipelago Theatre, going over the notes Danny—the Entertainment Director—had shoved into her hands. The thing was inch thick with rules, nicknames, and shout outs to special guests.

Having three staff of his own down with seasickness, Danny said more than once that he could kiss her for helping out, especially once he’d figured out that she was the solitary-single-girl the entire ship was talking about. (Nudge, nudge.)

As the noise level of the crowd gathering in the theatre outside JJ’s open door increased, so did her adrenalin levels. Which was odd, really, because she was the queen of temping. Her entire work history could be described as being thrown into the deep end of new situations at a moment’s notice. Once she’d been put in charge of manning the nibbles table at a meat-packers’ union meeting. Another time she’d found herself cold-calling for an ambulance chasing law firm. Front office at a private high school was far more gruelling than the first two, hands down. And yet she’d handled them all, without a wobbly nerve in sight.

It was when she looked through the crack in the door and saw Kane chatting to a table of bingo contestants—and looking big, and slick, and gorgeous in the dark suit and white shirt of his ‘security’ uniform—that the tension made sense.

She hadn’t seen him all day. Not since the kiss. Add her newfound knowledge of the betting ring and her niggling guilt at the fact that he might get into some kind of trouble on her account. . .

He stood, his jacket pulling tight across his broad shoulders. His head turned, slowly, as his gaze traversed the crowd. Looking for someone. Looking for her. When he found her, his gaze locked on tight. Her heart skipped several beats. Then made up for it by kicking into gear at double pace. He hadn’t moved, but everything about him seemed to contract as his cool eyes warmed, before sliding down, down, down...

Rather than borrowed purple polo or you-can-see-me-from-outer-space sparkles, in the end she’d gone with a fitted black dress with a cinched waist and a hem that stopped just shy of her knees. Paired with a jacket for her more secretarial type temp jobs it was sophisticated and clean. With her arms left bare, her hair a mass of tousled waves, smoky eyes, and red high heels, she hoped she looked ready to play.

When his eyes finally made their way back to hers, her pulse beat hard in her throat. She had no idea what his reaction to seeing her again might be. Would he look way as if nothing had happened? Would he extend a polite nod? Would his innate urbanity dictate that he would at least come say ‘hi’?

What she got was a shake of his head as he let out a long stream of air that might even have been a whistle. Then, gaze locked onto her with the determination of a heat seeking missile, he excused himself and headed her way.
