Chapter 13

I woke up with Ferris’s hand playing in my hair, twisting a wandering lock between his long fingers. If it was any normal day, I would have stayed in, losing myself between his sheets, while hiding from the whole wide world for another stolen moment in Paradise. But today was Brunch-with-the-Governor-day, and no matter how much Ferris was trying to avoid it, I wasn’t going to let him use me as a pretext to remain in bed.

‘I need to get dressed and get to the EMA,’ I turned to search for the safety of his chest, allowing myself to rest there for a few more minutes.

‘Fucking brunch,’ he muttered from time to time, cursing the moment he agreed to be a part of my plan.

Ferris was as eager as I was to waste a day locked in our secluded part of Heaven, but sweet dreams never lasted long, and ours was just about to come to an end.

‘At least you can stay for a little while. I have to run before I’ll be late for class.’ I quickly leaped into my clothes and rushed through the door, but not without giving him a knee-melting kiss on my way out.

Things were quieter than usual at the Academy. Things but not Cole, who seemed to be in a bad mood ever since I arrived in the hallway. ‘You better get your bags packed for the weekend. That fucking party is already doing my head in.’

‘What do you mean?’ I asked, not being entirely sure of what he was referring to.

‘Camden has like an entire fucking list of rules to follow. And I don’t follow fucking rules!’

‘What kind of rules?’

‘They want to give assignments to everyone so that they don’t have to do anything. He thinks I’ll be in charge of hiring a chef and a brigade to cook for us. Do I look like fucking Ratatouille!?’

The comparison made me laugh, but something else amused me much more ‘The insolence of these people. I don’t understand what they were thinking about giving a mission to a man of your value. Tasks are for staff, not for kings.’ I had to admit it was pretty funny that a living breathing soul could consider itself more important than Cole.

Though I was beginning to think that Cole didn’t find it to be funny at all. ‘Did you dare patronize me because of a bunch of retards!?’

‘Dare!?’ Did he really consider me to be his puppet!? I wanted to give him a long and thorough piece of my mind, but Jenna’s presence at the other end of the hallway made me reconsider my reactions. I could pay the price for my mutiny, but I wasn’t going to let my friend pay for my actions.

‘Do you have a problem regarding my authority, Mouse?’ His words were so crisp I knew they could bring nothing but trouble. And trouble it was since he jerked me to stand by his side and claim my role of his loving girlfriend again.
