Ancient Egyptians played senet, a popular board game. No one knows exactly how the game was played. Several sets were found in Tutankhamen’s tomb. This set is engraved with the name of Tut’s grandfather, Amenhotep III.

It was a problem for the royal couple. If Tut had no son, powerful men would fight to become pharaoh when he died. There might even be a civil war. Egyptians would suffer if that happened.

Tut could have married a second wife, but he didn’t. He still had plenty of time—or so he thought.
