On Sitting Down to Read King Lear Once Again.

I remember, towards the end of the awful bargaining scene with Goneril and Regan that precedes Lear’s expulsion into the wild, that first crack of thunder and the moment of silence that followed it. It was when Lear said:

You think I’ll weep;

No, I’ll not weep…

You could sense the whole company – actors, operators, stage managers and musicians – collectively brace their nerves, and draw breath for what was coming.
