The City of Manchester mortuary is an icy steel box inside a barren, high-ceilinged room, that forms part of the Oxford Road Campus within Manchester University. The attendant is an older man with a grey goatee. He wears a crumpled suit and scuffed shoes, like he just got off his shift and came in to deal with some last bit of business. Agatha needs to check the records for James Oakley, the guy killed in the hit-and-run last month.

Standing patiently at the counter, the attendant, whose name tag tells her he’s called James – oh, the irony – shuffles over and opens the register.

“Name?” he asks, with a flat, bored voice.

Easton displays her SmartCard that shows her credentials, “DC Easton. SO10 GMP.”

“Deceased’s name?”

“Oh, James Oakley. Thanks.”

He taps the keyboard, “No.”

“No?”

“Been released.”

“Okay, chatterbox, let’s see what’s going on here.” Agatha walks around the counter, rotating the monitor towards herself. He doesn’t look happy and raises a hand as if to stop her. She takes it and places it back by his side. “Come on now, let’s not play silly buggers. You can provide some real help for a change.”

He’s resigned that Agatha is not to be messed with. He sighs, “What do you need?”

“Show me the reports on the body. Bit quick, don’t you think? Releasing it?”

The man doesn’t respond, but wearily punches a few keys and brings up a rundown of what happened to the body of James Oakley. We trace a body in a series of well-documented processes. Once the cadaver is secured, then its identification becomes priority. A police liaison officer will coordinate with the family to ensure that they respect the deceased’s wishes once they’ve formally submitted a positive ID. Then they promptly action the organ and tissue donation. This poor sod could save someone else’s life by the simple act of dying.

The pathologist will carry out all the processes and toxicology reports. Then they return the belongings to the family and pass the report to the coroner. This is the important bit:. This is the guy who orders the inquest. This is the man, or woman, who oversees the investigation if there is a case to answer. The name attached is a Mr Richard Spillman He has issued a conclusion of Unlawful Killing.

Agatha does not know who this man is, but she needs to see they have followed the operational protocols. Who got to this body and how did they take a blood sample?

“Can you print this?”

The attendant rolls his eyes and hits another key. A printer next to the monitor whirrs. A couple of pages spit out. She takes them and scans the document. Passes it to the man.

“How could someone get in here and take blood from the deceased?”

He looks down at the page. “All looks in order. The only people to visit the body were the family. These are the names,” he points to a list of names, “of the police officers involved.” They are on the sheet, and it connects none of the officers with Emma Lancaster or the Bagman investigation.
