Chapter 40

‘How did you get hold of this again?’ Maxwell asked.

They were in Gawn’s office. She had called him in and told him she had new information. Then she had opened the envelope and the two had read through the pages. There were reports of charity concerts in Bangor, Larne and Ballymena. There was a profile of three of the members, up and coming musicians who were expected to make careers in music. One she recognised. He was a violinist and she knew he was a member of a chamber orchestra in London which had played at a concert she’d attended in the Wigmore Hall some years back. The second was Daniel Anderson. She knew that name and now she had to tell Maxwell how, and how she had got the information.

‘From Donna Nixon?’ He was incredulous. ‘You got it from Donna Nixon? And what did you give her in return?’

‘A heads up when we make a breakthrough.’

‘If this gets out McDowell will implode.’

‘It won’t get out. You’re the only one who knows.’

‘Me and Donna Nixon. You don’t think she might drop you in it if you don’t come up with the goods for her?’

‘I intend to keep my word. Whenever we’re about to make an arrest, I will let her know. Just enough to give her a head start on her rivals. Nothing more.’

‘Good luck with that, Gawn. You know what they say about lying down with dogs.’

‘I’ll take the consequences, whatever they are. But we need to follow up on this. Roberts was involved with Courtney and he ended up dying in a Thai prison as a suspected paedophile. Makes you think. We need to have a talk with Dave Osmond, officially this time. No friend of a friend bullshit.’

‘And we should probably trace that third young musician. What was her name?’

Gawn looked at the page again. ‘Kellie Beale.’

‘Right. I’ll get Jo on it.’
