Rapp later heard that the escort had confronted the royalists, ‘A grenadier of the escort, thinking them water carriers, hit them a couple of times with the flat of his sabre and they fell back.’ But Durand was more prosaic, limiting himself to stating that he had pushed between the two vehicles. This was enough for the cart and mare to recoil sharply, momentarily disconcerting and unbalancing Saint-Réjant as he later noted in the draft of a letter to Cadoudal:

Someone had promised to warn the culprit [ie the writer himself] when the First Consul’s coach set off. They did not. They said that the coach would be preceded by an escort. It was not.7 The culprit, alone and starved of information, only became aware that the coach was on its way when he saw it. It was then that the horse of a grenadier pushed him sharply against the wall and interrupted his work. He recovered and lit the fuse but the powder was not of the usual quality and so there was a delay of one or two seconds. Had that not been the case, the First Consul would have perished. It was the fault of the powder, not of the culprit.
