“Ma’am, I need you to turn around and put your hands behind your back,” the officer told Trixie. He had a pair of handcuffs out and took a step toward her. Her half-filled shopping cart was between them, and the officer put one hand on it to pull it out of the way. Trixie held the handle firm, keeping it in place.

“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. We don’t want to have to hurt you,” the older officer next to him said. His tongue flicked the corner of his mouth, like a snake. He had taken his pistol out of its holster but hadn’t pointed it at Trixie yet. There was a hard edge in his voice, and she could hear the undertones that told her more than his words did: he was enjoying this. This officer was old and out of shape compared to his younger partner, but she had no doubt which one was more dangerous.

Despite their apparent advantage in size and numbers, she knew the two officers had made a critical mistake. They had underestimated her. They thought she was weak and scared. They would soon learn how wrong they were.

With the quickness of a tigress, Trixie grabbed a hold of the end of the peanut butter container in the shopping basket and flipped it up at the young officer across from her. He was barely able to turn his head to the side before the glass jar smashed into the side of his face, sending him reeling backward.

The older officer’s eyes went wide, and he tried to raise his gun, but Trixie was on him before he could train it on her. She moved like a dancer, with effortless speed and perfect efficiency. There was no movement out of place or even an ounce of wasted energy. It was as if she was in a recital, performing a choreographed set of motions that she had rehearsed a thousand times before.

Trixie’s left hand wrapped around the top of the barrel of the officer’s pistol and her right came down in an arc, slapping the man hard in the face as she found her way to the back of the gun, on top of the officer’s own hand. Having both ends of the weapon between her hands, she pushed with her left and pulled with her right in a quick motion that wrenched the pistol free. The officer screamed as the movement bent his finger backward, breaking it against the edge of the trigger guard.

Trixie maintained her momentum and spun to club the younger officer with the handle of his partner’s weapon. There was a crunching sound as she connected with his skull. She knew that the gun was only useful to her as a blunt instrument; its automatic safety wouldn’t disengage for anyone but the registered owner.

Trixie turned her attention back to the older officer and stomped the side of his knee with her heel, forcing him to the ground. She then cracked him over the head with his own gun, knocking him into an unconscious heap.
