Shona had a couple of more questions for the staff nurse before she, Peter and Iain headed for the hospital staff canteen and a spot of breakfast. The harried nurse said she could spare two minutes and no more as the patients were waking up and they barely had a minute between them never mind two.

“Are Mrs Entwistle’s next of kin coming in?”

“Not until later.” Her eyes darted all round as she took in what was happening on the ward. “Much later.”

“Do they not usually want to see the body?”

“Yes. But Mr Entwistle chose not to. He’s coming in later to get the death certificate and her effects.”

“Can we please have her address?”

“I’m not allowed to give that infor—”

“Remember this?” Shona showed her the warrant again.

The staff nurse hurried to the office with Shona hot at her heels. She wrote the address down and handed it to Shona, saying, “I’ve really got to go now.”

Shona really had to go as well. A full Scottish breakfast and a large coffee were calling her name in the staff canteen.

“Do you no’ think it’s weird yon woman’s husband didn’t want to come in and see her body?”

“I think it’s extremely weird, hence the reason, Iain and I will be visiting him. You, my friend will be going back to the station to make sure the troops have their nose to the grindstone.”

Peter looked both exhausted and singularly happy about the suggestion. He, like many of them, was too old for this middle of the night malarky, but Shona wanted his take on things as his knowledge of crime scenes was unsurpassed. His take moved the case forward not one inch. “I’m fair flummoxed with all this. It’s no’ as if you can look at the body and know exactly what went down.”

“It’s tough when we don’t even know if it’s a crime scene. We can’t do all the usual forensic checks.”

Then the only sound that could be heard was that of chewing, swallowing, slurping. From their table that is. Shona listened carefully to the conversations at the tables around them. There was nothing useful to be gained. Like them the staff were baffled. And scared. They were all terrified it could happen on their ward and they could be blamed.

Shona’s car pointed its nose towards Clepington Road, whilst the state-of-the-art infotainment system blasted out Tchaikovsky. She was convinced the system cost as much as the car and wanted to make good use of it. The rush hour traffic was crippling so it took her forty minutes to do a ten-minute journey, a situation never guaranteed to boost her mood. She drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and considered using her horn, then decided that was not the best move for an officer of the law and it wasn’t the fault of the poor sods in front of her. They were just trying to get to their job much like her. As her mood fell her adrenaline levels rose in direct proportions. Shona
