The research staff somewhat redeemed themselves on Shona’s arrival at the Research Centre, providing her with a quiet room, a steaming mug of freshly brewed coffee and some top of the range chocolate biscuits. She interviewed Mandy’s colleagues one by one. Unfortunately, none of them could come up with a firm motive.

“It might have been someone from one of the drug companies. Our research would effectively render current drug treatment for cancer obsolete. That would have an impact on profits.”

“Is it possible that one of the drug companies could have found out?”

“Virtually impossible. No one outside this department knows anything about it. We haven’t even delivered papers on any part of it. It’s that sensitive.”

“Thank you for your time and your help. I’ll be in touch if there’s anything else.”

This gave Shona something to think about. If the research was worth so much money perhaps one of the ‘oh so innocent’ researchers was going to sell it and Mandy had found out. That meant Shona would have to look into the background of every researcher on the project.
