Bonnie gets up from Frank’s grave; she had told him something that I couldn’t hear, nor did I want to. She thanks me for the forethought and says she thinks they appreciate it. I have a shopping bag with me, and I begin passing out quarts of Bud. I stand in front of Maria’s grave, Bonnie is in front of Frank’s, Sweet Jesus takes Betty’s, and Nicky is by Dino’s. I crack open the beer and tell them to follow my lead. I slowly pour the beer on the grave while saying,

“To our brothers down below.

To drown the fire and quench the soul.

One by one we die alone.

Drop by drop our blood to the rivers flow.

As we follow our brothers on the journey home.”

“So that’s why you do that,” Nicky says.

“That is horrible,” Bonnie admonishes me. “You are saying that Frank is in Hell. You’re saying you believe Maria has gone to Hell.”

“We must all go through Hell to get into Heaven,” I say sternly, “Either in this life or the next. Even Jesus descended into Hell for three days before rising and He died without sin; I figure I give them ten times that period to make the journey for their sins. This little ceremony is to help them on their way to Heaven. And every time you drink, add a few drops of blood to keep the river flowing.”

We take time to pay our personal respects to each of our friends then get down to business in the nearby mausoleum. I give them a contact sheet and tell everyone to memorize it as quick as possible and then destroy it.

Three used car ads will be placed in three different newspapers, two will have a phone number to call and the third will provide the time and date to call. I tell them to not buy the papers, to simply check and make a mental note, and we’ll give each other at least a two-day lead to make contact. Bonnie’s is a 69 GTO, Sweet Jesus’ a 65 Mustang, Nicky’s a 70’s Lincoln Mark III, and I have a 70 Buick Riviera.

We also lay out plans for finding Joey and his accomplices. Nicky’s idea is to attack Banoa’s businesses right out, especially the liquor and cigarette smuggling operation, as it is the most vulnerable. His reasoning is that if it costs them enough money his own people may eventually turn on him and his son. They are already pissed over the rocket attack and the ambush at my house.

Nicky says, “I can’t believe you blew up your own house.”

“It held too many memories,” I tell them sadly.

“Your neighbors were quite mad,” he informs me. “The houses on either side were badly damaged, but none injured. However, Old Joe firebombed two of my father’s strip clubs; there weren’t too many people inside at the time, so no one got hurt. He just wanted to close the clubs, fight fire with fire.”

“Don’t worry, I have a new business venture for you,” I tell him.
