Stella and Ander headed to Macâs office when they got back to the resident agency.
When she opened the office door, Stella found the cyber expert with her arms folded on her desk, her back straight, and her lips drawn into a thin line. Mac looked like the smartest kid in the class, about to receive a commendation from the teacher for writing an exceptionally good essay.
Stella eyed her friend. âYouâre looking very pleased with yourself.â
Ander plopped into the seat opposite Mac and let the chair swivel. âIf youâve bagged yourself the last protein bar in the vending machine, I will not be happy.â
Mac pulled a sad face. The bandage on her temple stretched. The bruise above her brow made her fake sadness appear particularly pathetic, adding to the dramatics. âNo, Iâve done something even better than emptying the vending machine.â
Stella crossed her fingers. âYouâve found our pianist?â
Theyâd been trying to locate Boris the Boringest for hours now, but the musician seemed to have dropped off the planet. Even the check Jeremy Deemâs firm had written for the pianistâs time had been linked to a business accountâ¦Boris Entertainment.
They were also trying to track down each of the audience members, but Jeremy Deemâs assistant claimed she wasnât the one whoâd made those arrangements. The trip had been planned by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, and Karen Neuglass had been happy to leave all the details to their administrative department.
Mac wrinkled her nose. âIâm good, but not that good. But while tech has been working to clear up the video enough to recognize the audience members, Iâve tracked down your Alice20.â
âThatâs some fast work.â Guilt settled in Stellaâs stomach. She shouldâve insisted Mac go home rather than dive into a big research project.
Ander didnât appear to share Stellaâs remorse. He rocked his chair first one way, then the other. âHow did you do it? Did you have to dig into the back end of the internet? Hack into servers? Or slip the FBIâs latest, greatest spyware into the side of someoneâs laptop when they werenât looking?â
Mac laughed. âI did an internet search. Took me about ten minutes. Here, look.â
She swung one of the monitors on her desk around and wheeled her own chair to the end, joining Ander and Stella.
The screen showed the video of Boris the Boringest. The image was frozen on Jeremy Deemâs open mouth. Mac must have stopped the playback mid-snore.
Mac scrolled down the screen. Their victim disappeared, replaced by a list of names and emojis. Mac slipped the cursor onto Alice20 and clicked. The screen switched to a page showing an avatar with a large capital A, a list of videos, and a tab for Alice20âs favorite channels, but little else.
âIf you tap Alice20âs name, you get her profile. Thereâs not much here. She hasnât filled in any of the profile fields or uploaded videos of her own, but you can see what other channels she watches.â
Stella scanned the channels. âItâs all classical music.â
âRight. She hasnât got the most varied of tastes.
