Chapter 15

“ARE YOU SERIOUS?!”

“Why are you getting so tense?” Olya fired back instantly. “Are you jealous?”

“Oh, please. It’s just that at MosTech, workplace romances are strictly forbidden,” I dodged. “What if she’s messing around with someone on the job?”

“No way!” Olya looked genuinely surprised. “Why?”

“Ever heard of harassment?” I lied with passion. “MosTech’s an international company, it has strict legal standards… And personal relationships are tricky… one day you’re screwing around, the next she’s filing a complaint that you seduced, manipulated and pressured her… Who needs that kind of mess?”

“Well, yeah,” Olya batted her eyelashes. “So, no extracurricular activities on the job, huh?”

Women’s minds really work in mysterious ways. Out of everything I said, that’s what she latched onto.

“Of course,” I confirmed. “It’s serious. Could cost you your job.”

“Maybe some of them are coworkers,” she mused, intrigued. “She’s not picking them up in clubs, right?”

Her resentment of the successful Dr. Skuratova quickly overpowered any sense of sisterhood—if such a thing even exists. I recalled how things had started between me and the psychologist, in a club, no less, and chuckled.

“What are they like, these guys?” I asked.

Olya wasn’t exactly a keen observer. According to her, both men were “rich” but “old,” which, in her mind, probably meant anyone over thirty.

“One’s actually a total cutie,” she concluded. “The other one’s kinda shady. But she sleeps with both.”

“Both? At once?!” Now I was genuinely floored.

“One after the other, you perv,” Olya giggled. “You see all kinds of stuff in a salon. One guy brings her in, the other picks her up… and a third one pays for everything!”

“What if I show you some pictures—think you’d recognize them?”

“Show me… show me…” she mumbled, snuggling her nose into my shoulder and dozing off.

As for me, I was left staring into the dark like an idiot.

As if the day hadn’t been full enough. The coincidence that Olya knew Dr. Skuratova didn’t even surprise me. The salon where she worked was the biggest and most popular in the area. Marina went there too, if I wasn’t mistaken.

In female circles, this kind of stuff spreads like a virus. They’re always sharing the same hairdressers, manicurists, beauticians, masseuses… Thank god, they don’t share their lovers. I remember Marina once telling me that women at neighboring office desks sometimes even get their periods in sync. Though she might’ve just said that to mess with the naive boy I used to be.

Olya’s appearance in my life had been just as sudden. Not long ago she wasn’t here, and now she was out cold beside me, hogging the whole blanket and using my left arm as a pillow. As for how long she’d stick around—I didn’t know, and didn’t really want to guess.

But Dr. Skuratova having two lovers? Now that was something. I couldn’t shake the feeling they might be from MosTech. First, because she’d only just arrived here along with the rest of the execs for the launch of the beta.

Second, she didn’t strike me as the Tinder or club-hopping type.
