Chapter 14

FIRST, THEY TRIED TO SHOOT ME with arrows, then they tried to pelt me with rocks, but neither worked. The magical barrier blocked everything, both from my side and theirs. For my part, I found one stone within the circle and tried to throw it at Sibyl, equally to no effect. I didn’t bother risking my weapon in case it broke.

Simba proved the most stubborn. Even once everyone else had moved on, he remained standing before me, head tilted and brow furrowed.

“Got what you wanted, huh?” he said. “You got sweet AngelCake kicked out of the beta…”

“Simba,” I snapped, “what’s more important to you, winning the beta or preventing your friend from losing her mind?”

“So she’s not your friend…” he surmised.

“What does that have to do with anything?” I tried to explain. “Didn’t you see what happened to Yumi, Simon? Do you want the same for Stacy?”

“Nothing happened to Yumi,” Simba muttered. “The game just copied her, that’s all…”

This is an interesting twist. Simba seems to have a different version of events in his head. I wonder who prepped him for our conversation? Though there’s no need to guess — there she is, listening in, her eyes agleam. It seems like she’s always around me, eavesdropping on any conversation I’m having.

Realizing that he had said too much, Simba turned and stalked off to attend to his paladin’s duties, and Sibyl took his place before my cage.

“I snared you at last… you demon,” she sneered, sitting down cross-legged on the ground.

“Why am I demon suddenly?” I asked.

I had no desire to talk to her. I wanted nothing more than to take down this brat, preferably with a juicy crit, so she wouldn’t even have time to squeak. But, since we seemed to be in a stalemate, and I had no idea how to get out of this damn trap, getting information was the only thing I could do. I hoped that at least by making small talk now, I could learn something about this spell imprisoning me and how I even ended up in it.

“What else could you be?” Sibyl feigned surprise. “There’s only one true Goddess. All the others are demons.”

“What about ‘five gods, five principles upon which our world is built?’” I reminded her of her own ritual in the city square.

“You’re evil,” Sibyl grimaced. “These people are convinced that you were sent by Death itself. Fear, vice, deceit and murder… are these divine virtues or mortal sins? These brave paladins here are prepared to cleanse the world of filth like you.” She waved her hand behind her without looking.

“There aren’t enough of them for such a task,” I pointed out. “Don’t overestimate yourselves.”

Sibyl turned and frowned. There were indeed fewer players in the clearing, much less than the host that had stood in the square preparing to storm the mayor’s palace or the spider mansion. We had really cooled the hottest heads the day before.

“Anyway, you won’t interfere with our plans,” the healer — or the priestess — got up and absentmindedly dusted off the fringe of her long dress.
