Chapter 24

Oh, hell, no!’

Seeing Bunsen and Snake there as I walk into the Press Office has me turning around and walking straight back out. Though not before I see the shock on both Betty’s and Sam’s faces at my new look. Ha! Worth showing up for that alone.

I’m halfway down the empty corridor when I hear footsteps behind me. My heart races; my muscles tense. The killer snatched their victims whilst in school. Which means they know how to get around unseen. I spin, brace, and . . .

Huh! Interesting; it’s Betty who’s come after me, and not Sam. Sod her twice for that. I want to be angry. Angry that after everything that went down this weekend, she summoned me here. But I’m not. Least, not any more. I’m done. Done with Sam and this stupid Scooby Club, or whatever we are. Maybe I’ll find Millie at lunch. Now that I’ve shed my whole raised-from-the-dead look, I might even have a shot with her.

‘What?’

Betty blanches and looks up at me. ‘Nothing.’ Red blotches bloom across her neck. ‘It’s just you look so different. I mean, nice, really nice.’

Same can’t be said for her and those puffy, dark circles beneath her bloodshot eyes.

‘Look, I’m really sorry about Chelsey. But I can’t be a part of this any more.’

‘No, wait. Please, Guy? We know what happened on Friday, and we’re so, so sorry.’

‘Then why invite those apes?’

‘If you’ll just come back and hear what they have to say, we—’

‘What are you two doing here?’

We both turn to see Zig strolling towards us. Something in her tone makes me shudder.

But Betty doesn’t seem to notice. ‘Oh, hi, Zig.’ She beams. ‘We have a meeting in the Press Office.’

‘What Press Office?’

Betty points to the door. ‘Just there.’

But rather than look impressed, Zig looks furious and immediately goes to check it out.

I go to leave, but Betty slides across and halts me in my path. ‘Connor North wants to speak to you.’

‘Why?’ My brow furrows. ‘Does he think I did it too?’

‘Course not. But Jake told him what we’re doing, and—’

‘We are not doing anything. Least, not any more.’

She sighs. ‘Guy, please? He says he has information but wants to talk to you first.’ She checks her watch. ‘It could be important.’

‘Why me?’ I cross my arms. ‘And what information?’

‘I don’t know. But don’t you want to find out? If it helps find Riley’s and—’ She takes a wobbly breath, ‘Chelsey’s killer, isn’t that enough?’

‘And Emma’s.’

She nods. ‘That poor girl. Wrong place, wrong time.’

‘You mean with Chelsey?’

She looks away. Her bottom lip quivers.

‘Fine. Tell Connor to come find me. I’ll be at lunch.’

The door to the Press Room opens and Zig comes out. ‘Are you two still here?’ she says with a huff. ‘Either go to lunch or get on with your meeting. The others are already waiting inside. You’ve heard the warnings. It’s not safe to hang around out here.’

‘Got it.’ I offer her a tight-lipped smile and wait for her to disappear around the corner.
