GRAFTON POLICE

43.

The call from Sergeant Harrison had come out of the blue.

“Mister Herewini, I am Sergeant Harrison. I need to tell you that your daughter Zoe has disappeared.”

“What? What’s happened?”

“We are not fully aware, Mister Herewini. She was being tested to diagnose her social interaction difficulties. Your daughter works in a high school during the day so Doctor Brown was working with her in his office in the evening. A female colleague and Dr Brown’s daughter were nearby. When they went to find what was delaying Zoe and Dr Brown they found the office was empty.”

Mac thought of various scenarios. “Are you saying they have taken off together?”

“No, Mister Herewini. That is an option but we believe from our preliminary investigation they have been abducted in retaliation for Zoe throwing a remote control at a professor.”

”Please call me Mac. Everyone else does. That seems a bit extreme?”

“Doctor Brown was untangling Zoe’s problem. He left notes behind saying that her behaviour goes back to the night her sister was killed,” said Harrison.

“If anyone can sort her out it’s him,” said Mac.

Mac Herewini had been pleased to see Troy Brown at the last AA meeting. He had been where Troy was now and he knew that Troy would need support. Mac was an occasional attendee at the meetings because he lived out of town. Mac decided he would attend more regularly over the next few weeks so he could help more.

Senior Sergeant Harrison said “Inspector Jackson says they are being kept out of circulation until after a hearing. The professor wants the girl expelled, stood down they call it, but Brown wants the professor fired.”

“I know Jackson,” said Mac. “He and Detective Travis investigated Trisha’s murder. Zoe was upset but she was doing alright until I blamed her for Trisha’s murder. Looking back, Zoe had a breakdown. She was a kid and kids don’t have breakdowns. She started a new life and I never see her. She can’t remember a thing about that night but she must have seen it all.”

“Dr Brown said he will help her get her memory back and when that happens he can work on an answer,” said Mac. “Dr Davidson told me. It’s all in a report, apparently.”

“We still have DNA samples,” said Harrison. “One day we will catch him. The criminal I mean.”

“I hope so,” said Mac. “There are times when I almost give up hope. They tested everyone at the party, but they got no DNA matches. Since then it’s been all downhill for Zoe.”

“What about you, Mac? It seems your swag has a heavy load of guilt in it,” said Harrison.

“I was, I am, an alcoholic. I went on the wagon and haven’t drunk since Zoe left,” said Mac. “That reminds me of something important. If Brown and Zoe have run off, you should check his credit cards for purchases of gin or vodka.”

“I understand. Thanks Mac,” said Harrison. “I’ll get on to that right away.”

Senior Sergeant Harrison went to tell Inspector Jackson. Travis was chatting to him.
