An hour later, we had come up empty-handed and returned to the lobby of the building.

As we were about to leave, the woman at reception stopped me. “Excuse me, ma’am? Detective?”

I turned around and saw her half out of her seat, trying to get our attention. “Yes, what can I do for you?”

“Oh, well, it’s just Mr. Martinez’s cousin has been by asking about cleaning out his apartment. He wants to put it back on the market and, well… we weren’t sure what to tell him.”

His cousin? Had we come across a cousin in our research of Samson? I wasn’t sure. I glanced at Angel, and he seemed confused as well. “The investigation is still ongoing, so it may be a few weeks yet before he can gain access. Do you by chance have this cousin’s name?”

“Sure thing, one second.” The woman sat back down and shifted a few things on her desk, then came up with a card. “This is what he gave me.”

I took it from her and looked at the card.

Alejandro Gómez, G & G Imports/Exports.

I’d seen that name before. I showed the card to Angel, and he nodded. “Thank you, we’ll get in touch with Mr. Gómez. However, if he contacts you before we do, you might let him know it may be a while before he can take possession of his cousin’s things.”

“Okay, thank you.”

“My pleasure,” I replied and then left with Angel. When we reached the car, I said, “Wasn’t this guy’s name in some of Samson’s social media posts?”

Angel nodded. “Yes, I think there were a couple where he was mentioned. And he was in a couple of the pictures Ruby took at one of the parties.”

“Why didn’t he come up as next of kin on Samson? I thought all his relatives were down in Mexico?”

“His parents definitely are. I made that call. I’m not sure where this Alejandro Gómez fits in as far as Samson’s family goes.”

“Maybe I should give him a call and find out.”

“Let me do some digging into him before we do that. See what I can find,” Angel suggested.

“All right. I need to look into filing a restraining order anyway.”

Angel flashed his eyes toward me. “What did he do now?”

I told him about being followed all the way out to Santa Monica the night before. “And I’m pretty sure it was Jordan. He’s getting more and more unstable, Angel.”

“Damn, I thought I’d gotten through to him,” he muttered. “He’d seemed okay and said he’d back off when I talked to him a few days ago.”

I shook my head. “He hasn’t. He’s calling me from random numbers. I think he’s gotten some kind of number-spoofing app or something because every time I block him, he comes back with another. And the emails have gotten pretty disturbing as well.” I’d caught a few words in a couple of them before forwarding them to Stephen.

“Shit. I’m sorry, Marce.”

“Not your fault. This is all on Jordan. Anyway, I need to look into that order.
