Wrap-Up
Children with low self-esteem tend to quit easily because they see their struggles as a sign of inadequacy. They get trapped by their negative self-focus, telling themselves, I’m no good. I can’t do this. There’s no hope.
Helping your child learn to persist won’t be easy or quick. Sermons about the virtues of stick-to-itiveness are likely to make your child feel even more flawed. Instead, emphasize that frustration and discouragement are normal and temporary. Look for opportunities to help your child learn that effort plus effective strategy will pay off. It will be easiest for your child to persist with activities that your child finds meaningful.
The next chapter will look at one of the most painful heart-breaking problems of children with low self-esteem: their tendency to be harshly self-critical.
Take-Home Points
Kids need child-size goals to develop child-size grit.
Teach children with low self-esteem how to keep going by focusing on effective learning strategies, rather than just telling them that they should persevere.
The connection between effort and outcome is learned. If your child hasn’t experienced that effort pays off, it’s hard to keep trying.
Connecting with a mentor, team, or area of learning that they want to master helps kids with low self-esteem move beyond paralyzing self-focus to embrace effort.
