Chapter 20 – Vince

The sounds coming from the closed garage was the stuff of horror films. Lying on the floor with my arm thrown over my head, I tried to focus on Juan’s interrogation instead of what the berserker was doing to my leg.

“One of us should really be in there with him,” I snarled. Sweat beaded on my brow. The arm over my face was shaking from the pain.

“He’s not doing anything he hasn’t done a hundred times.” Jackson poured more alcohol on my calf.

The tissue above my knee had been the worse. The priest had to help him stitch that. Even with the potions and magical herbs we kept in stock, the wound was at risk of infection from the swamp water.

But I’d been firm. No witch doctor.

“Hundreds of demonic possessions?” I challenged.

Jackson grunted. “He worked with the Vatican before coming to this parish. He’s proficient.”

That was true.

“Honestly, I agree with Juan. You should stay off this tomorrow night.” Jackson clipped the final suture.

I watched, not giving him an answer as he slathered ointment over the stitches. Jackson laid a sterile patch over the area, then cut a second into smaller pieces. Once those were laid, he gently wrapped strips of gauze over most of my leg.

“I have to hunt.” My voice didn’t shake, but my hands did. Even when I clenched my fists. “I have to protect this island.”

“You’ll only make it worse. Take some time off tomorrow night.”

“The sooner we end this succubus, the sooner we can scoot up to New Orleans.” It was a low blow, but I said it anyway.

Jackson’s eyes flashed yellow. “Fuck you.”

I chuckled darkly. “It sucks feeling helpless, doesn’t it?”

Tucking in the tail of the bandage, Jackson met my gaze. And then the fucker slapped the wound.

I jack-knifed, roaring into the kitchen.

The kitchen door burst open, and Juan came stumbling in from the garage. “What happened?” he shouted.

Jackson grinned like the fucking bastard he was. “Teaching this asshole a lesson.”

“By maiming him?” Juan growled. “The bat is no use to us dissected!”

“I probably deserved it.” I braced my hands on the floor behind me and leaned back, breathing through the wash of pain. “Of course we’re taking the situation in New Orleans seriously, Jackson.”

“Has something happened?” Karmichael stepped through the front door, wiping his boots on the mat.

I looked at the sweatpants Juan had brought up from my room. There was no way to put them on before the wolf saw me in my boxers.

“There was another abduction. Witch’s daughter, fifteen years old,” Jackson ground out.

“If Barbara feels threatened, we’ll go.” Juan clapped a hand on Jackson’s shoulder.

The berserker shrugged him off. I snorted silently to myself. I would have done the same. Neither of us liked physical comfort.

Maybe it would be nice...from her.

I pushed that trail of thought away. There was no way to hide an erection in my boxer briefs. So I thought of the possessed fuck outside. How close he’d been to Alida. That sent my blood boiling, chasing away the tendrils of pleasure that had been vining in my mind.
