Khanga

Worn all over Kenya as a wraparound skirt, apron, shawl, baby carrier, and general all-purpose garment, the khanga originates on the coast, where Swahili women traditionally wear two at once: one as a skirt, one as a veil. Khangas were introduced in the mid-nineteenth century when a group of Zanzibari women came up with the novel idea of turning printed kerchiefs into multipurpose fashion items. They bought them in lengths of six, cut them into two lengths of three, and finally sewed them together to make a handy 3 × 2 sheet dubbed the leso, which could be put to all manner of uses.
