Chapter Eight

Israel’s hands ached from clenching the damned steering wheel as if he actually had any control over the SUV free, skating from one side of the narrow road to the other. Fucking hell, you’d think the thing was being remote-controlled by that damned figure skater his staff was always mooning over. What was his name? Nathen something…

Vowing to make Cooper Hick’s life a living hell, Israel breathed a sigh of relief when the gated entrance to the ShadowDance Club finally came into view. He managed to slide to a stop inches before the bumper of his skate-mobile rammed the iron gate. When Israel realized he was too far past the intercom to press the damned button without getting out of the car, a stream of colorful curses filled the vehicle.

Reaching for the door handle, he was relieved to see the gates start sliding open. Sending up a silent prayer to the great Goddess of high-tech security equipment, he gingerly stepped on the accelerator and cursed like a drunken sailor when the ass end of the vehicle swerved in a sweeping arc.

“He may have saved Cat’s life, but after this, we’re square. I don’t owe Hicks a damned thing, except giving him a ration of shit for pulling this stunt. All bets are off, and the playing field is even. Fucker could have waited a couple of hours for me to get to Denver.”

Muttering under his breath, Israel was busy plotting Cooper’s demise when the lights of the Lamonts’ impressive home came into view. Hicks stood on the top stone step, leaning casually against one of the impressive natural stone pillars, a sheepish smile on his damned face. Stepping from the vehicle before it completed its slippery roll to a stop, Israel glared at the other man—who had the audacity to chuckle.

“Judging from your expression, I’m assuming you didn’t enjoy the trip.”

If Hicks was trying to piss him off, he’d succeeded. Israel growled—the ominous sound would have frightened anyone with any sense.

Waving his hand, Cooper laughed, “You don’t scare me, Israel. Now, your sister? She’s a different story—Catalina can scare the hell out of me in too many ways to mention—but your snarling attitude is wasted on me.” Cooper took several steps closer, his expression changing from amusement to business. “I had to get here as fast as possible. Come on in, and we’ll talk. Alex has already assigned you one of their guest suites, so bring your bags.”

“I wanted to stay with Kensington at the cabin, but I’m fucking done. I’m not driving any more tonight.” He was exhausted. There wasn’t a chance in hell he was putting forth the effort to go anywhere else before he’d rested and given the locals a chance to clear the roads. “Shit, if it doesn’t stop snowing soon, I’ll probably be here until June.” Pulling his bags from the back of the rental, Israel stomped up the steps.

“And don’t think I’m not going to dream up a fitting punishment for you leaving Denver without me.
