Although housing is not necessary in unfoxed areas, it offers protection in winter and is a useful means of collecting eggs. But the eggs will not be clean, house or no house, clean litter or wet.

A duck will lay its egg invariably before 8 a.m. so it can be kept in until then, thereby sacrificing the early worm. Whilst whiling away the tedium of waiting to be let out, ducks appear to play football with their eggs, so dirty do they come.

It is, of course, only the natural instinct of the wild duck whose eggs are hidden and stained for protective purposes, and it is common to find all the eggs from one pen hidden in the litter in one nest.

If the house is used it should be airy, and of simple construction, provided it offers protection from vermin.
