APPLY WITHIN FOR THE ADDRESS OF MRS SUGDEN

I stared at the card. This seemed too good to be true. Matt was right. I needed a housekeeper, especially now that I had something to do, something important, helping another woman who was suffering, as we all were.

Although my mother’s first choice would be to have me back with her, as a second choice she would relish helping to choose a housekeeper. I could hear her voice in my head telling me to call at a reputable staff agency and interview candidates. I could picture her going through the small advertisements in The Lady magazine, circling likely individuals. Finding a housekeeper would become a major and time-consuming task.

I stepped into the shop.

The newsagents know me. I have the papers and the Photographic Journal delivered.

We wished each other good morning.

‘When was that card put in the window, Mrs Weatherfield, the one advertising for a housekeeping post?’

‘Just this morning. Mind you, the person had several cards with her. She must be placing them roundabout.’

‘What was she like?’

‘She seemed right enough.’

‘Then I should like her address please.’

Buying groceries could wait. Once I have made up my mind, I do not like to waste time. By the end of the day I intended to have a housekeeper. The housekeeper would have an annexe. Mrs Sugden and I were meant for each other, I felt sure.

I would help a mother find her lost boy.

From now on I would not sit twiddling my thumbs, waiting for a future. There was something in the world for me to do. I would start this very day.
