The EGW audience’s laughter grew as they watched the game’s opening movie, in all its absurd glory and backed by a rollicking tune.

As he played through the first level, Takahashi described the story of the game, telling the audience about the King of All Cosmos and his son, the Prince’s adventures. Laughter and spontaneous applause broke out as the katamari grew in size, absorbing socks, vegetables, and animals from the garden. After a few minutes of gameplay, he switched to show a video of the katamari once it has grown to city-size, capable of absorbing people off the street, and then buildings off the continent.

One final gameplay demo showed off the end credits, in which the Prince is rolling a katamari across the globe, picking up each individual country as he goes. “I could say I made this game just for this screen,” Takahashi added.

Darius Kazemi was in that audience that day. He wrote that “the feeling in that room when Keita showed Katamari was just electric. It was amazing to see all these game developers, literally the best of the best in the world, in complete awe of this weird little game. At the end of the presentation, when he said there were no plans to port it to the US market, everyone was just devastated.”

As Takahashi and the fans would soon learn, the excitement generated by that presentation was enough to move mountains.

Against the odds, demand for Katamari Damacy in the West continued to grow. The game’s performance in Japan, the positive reviews from the reviews of Tokyo Game Show, and the excitement generated by the Experimental Game Workshop, meant that the American press was eager to receive the odd game they referred to as “Namco’s snowball simulator.”

Takahashi later stated that the positivity generated by the EGW led directly to him being invited to participate at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), as well as resulting in the American release.

And the press loved it. When Katamari Damacy was released in North America on September 22, 2004 for $20, positive reviews flowed in.

“One of the best games that I’ve played all year,” wrote GameSpy, noting that they wished it was longer. 1UP agreed: “Simply put, this is one of the most original and entertaining games we’ve come across in ages.”

Many outlets spoke specifically to the feelings of joy that it evoked in them. “It’s the happiest game I’ve ever played, and the happiness is infectious,” wrote Eurogamer, while IGN stated, “It’s something that’s fun, something that’s happy, and something that’s so well put together and so enjoyable, whatever faults it may have fade behind the laughter and smiles it so effortlessly creates.”

Reviewers also wrote about the game’s aesthetic and music as a major selling point. GameSpot called the game “unapologetically surreal, which can make it tough to look away from,” and PSX Extreme praised the game’s “surreal Yellow Submarine style cinemas, the happy-happy music, [and] the twisted dialogue.”

Others called attention to Katamari Damacy’s singular, cohesive vision. Edge magazine wrote, “When
