Chapter Eight
His mate was in danger. Always. What the hell did that mean? He hadnât pushed her to tell him more, because even though heâd claimed her, she hadnât fully committed to him yet. He was afraid if he pushed too hard, she would run. Just because sheâd admitted to him that she was in danger, didnât mean she was willing to tell him everything. Or to accept him in her life. Sheâd called him her mate, but that didnât mean anything without her mate mark securing their bond. He frowned as he wondered how she would mark him. He still had no idea what kind of shifter she was.
Zev sighed, taking a sip of the strong coffee heâd made while waiting for the Enforcer Colton was sending to take Nelly home. Bastard better be someone they could trust, or heâd answer to him. He wasnât allowing the young woman to leave with anyone he didnât think could protect her and get her home safely.
Zev frowned, looking down into the dark brew. Karma had been right when sheâd said he was a true alpha. He easily could have taken over his pride if he wanted to, but he hadnât challenged Luther for the position. He was a liger. Not a lion, not a tiger, but a mix of the two. A pride of lions didnât want someone like him leading them. Some of the older pride members hadnât liked it when his father took his mother as a mate. They didnât care for the idea of their species mingling with each other. Whatever. He didnât give a shit what species his Karma was. She could be a damn lizard for all he cared. He frowned, his gaze going over to where Karma sat with Nelly. Were there even lizard shifters out there?
âWhat is it, Zev?â
His eyes met his mateâs, and he felt his cheeks flush slightly. Shrugging, he turned back around to look out the window.
âZevyn?â
He stiffened, slowly turning to face her. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Nelly go into the bathroom and shut the door, probably to give them privacy. âYeah?â
âTalk to me.â
He shrugged, his gaze going over her shoulder to rest on a picture hanging on the wall. âI was just thinking.â
Karma surprised him when she walked over and slid an arm around his waist, moving in close and tilting her head up to meet his gaze. âAbout?â
He sighed, leaning down to place a kiss on her forehead. âYou said once that you thought I was a true alpha, and you were right. I easily could have bested Luther and taken over as alpha of our pride.â
âWhy didnât you?â Karma asked, one of her hands going to rest lightly on his chest.
âMy father was a lion, my mother a tigress. There are those in the pride who were against our parents getting together. They didnât like the idea of the two species mixing.â He took another sip of the hot coffee and then set it down on the table next to them.
