The drive back to the clubhouse is a silent one. It isnât uncomfortable or awkward, but safe and secure. I feel bad for not carrying on a conversation. I just have too much on my mind. The bomb that Amos dropped is a big one and itâs still settling. Itâs not exactly easy to come to terms with the fact that an angry Irishmen that controls an entire city is after you and your family.
Amos puts the truck into park outside of the clubhouse, and the black building almost blends in with the night, which makes it difficult to see.
âYou know Iâm not going to let anything happen to you and your sisters, right? Iâm going to protect you.â
âHow? Iâm not going to let you put your life at risk for me. We arenât your responsibility. Iâm who my sisters have now. Itâs up to me to protect them.â
âAnd you are by choosing to stay here with us. If you leave, there is no telling what can happen if he finds you. You have to stay.â
âBut if we stay, your club could get hurt. I donât want that,â I explain, turning in the passenger seat so I face him. âI donât want anything to happen to you.â
âIâd rather take the chance than have you out there on your own. Donât be stubborn.â
âMe?â I fake being insulted and open the door to get out. âI am far from stubborn.â
âYou better shut that door. Iâm not done being a gentleman. Go on,â he says, jutting his chin out toward the door. âClose it.â
I huff out a breath and shut it again, blocking out the cold.
He gets out and walks around the front of the truck. Again, Iâm watching him powerwalk through the built-up pile of snow, and he swipes a chunk of snow off the hood before getting to my door. Butterflies flap around in the chambers of my heart as he clicks the handle. Freezing air hits me, and he stretches out his hand to help me down.
This truck is gigantic.
âIâm going to need a stepladder to get in and out of this thing.â
âSprings, there is no way Iâm going to let a stepladder steal my thunder,â he replies, holding my hand as he shuts the door.
The headlights flash when he presses the button on the key fob to lock the truck. Iâm bummed we are back here. I want us to crawl into the truck and drive so we can be alone. Itâs late, but I donât want to say goodnight.
I want to say good morning, but I donât have the courage to ask if he wants to spend the night. We donât have to have sex if he doesnât want to, I donât know if Iâm ready for that, but maybe heâd just want to hang out? He has had too many opportunities to kiss me and hasnât, so I donât think he will. Which means Iâm in the friendzone.
Thatâs what itâs called, right? When one person is interested
