Something in the air is drugging us, or something.

This isn’t a game. These are The Games. Sure lots of athletes do their fair share of dicking around while here, but taking a pleasure ride this late at night—the night before the team event?

It’s freaking insane.

I pull the wig off Kane’s head, giggling as he drives east into Chiba. Even with an inky sky overhead, a few stars peeking out as we get farther from downtown, I can tell it’s beautiful here. I wonder if we’ll have a chance to see it in daylight.

“This is crazy.”

“It’s nuckin futs,” Kane concurs, issuing a deep, warm chuckle that rumbles from his chest.

“What if you’re late to the event? There could be traffic. Don’t you need to practice? How late are we going to—”

“I’ve had plenty of practice.” He shifts to find comfort in his seat, reaches over the console, and takes my hand. Like it’s nothing at all. Like it’s what we do. Like we do it like this. “I’ve got what I need.”

Oh dear lord in heaven, I am so aware of my hand right now. Where it’s touching his. I gulp a swallow. “I’m not sure your coaches would agree.”

“They won’t.” He half shrugs. “It’ll be my ass on a platter. And then we’ll fuckin win and it won’t matter.”

“Hey, that rhymes.”

“Hey…you’re cute.” He smirks.

I glance away, heat crawling up my neck and baking my cheeks. This is more than a puppy-love crush. It’s Kane. It’s real. I think I am falling in real love with him. How did this even happen?

And, I think he’s falling for me too.

Kane stops the car at a lookout. We lapse into a comfortable quiet. My hand is still cocooned in Kane’s.

His thumb is tickling soft circles against my knuckle. For long beats I close my eyes and feel it, feel his ephemeral touch sending little energy pulses into my skin, and deeper, soothing me into the very tissue, into the nerve, into the marrow.

“What are you thinking?” I break the silence. His eyes are closed. A slow smile softens his face. Those lips. Shit. I want to kiss those lips so, freaking, bad. Again.

Again. Again. Again.

“You really want to know what I’m thinking, Laska?”

I think so… There’s an uncertainty squeezing around me, doubt, shyness, I don’t really know. It’s like a tight belt that’s holding me from reaching for him and making what I think is about to happen, happen.

“Do I?” I ask, feeling as if a notch on the proverbial belt unsnaps. Pop!

He looks over at me. His grin widens. “You know how hard it is not to touch you?”

My eyes fall to where our fingers are interlocked. His thumb still busily stroking the top of my hand. “You are touching me.”

“No ma’am. This is me touching you.” He sends his other hand over. Cupping my face, he gently brushes the seam of my mouth with the pad of his thumb. Pop, pop. My jaw goes slack. My eyes flutter closed and he leans in, claiming my lips in a slow, slow kiss that burns my entire body to life.
