Chapter 10.
We met the other boys for the following class. It was History and it was the first one that I felt more comfortable with. The teacher was an old guy and he didnât seem very aware of the fact that he was teaching delinquents. The room didnât follow the rule of silence, people started talking and not paying attention. The teacher, Mr. Biggs, didnât seem to notice. He kept writing on the board, nevertheless. I felt really bad for him and tried my best to pay attention to the class. However, Jack turned all the time to talk to me, Miles kept being sarcastic, and Phoenix laughed about everything.
Oh, well.
The class ended and the day went on. It was getting much easier. I wasnât feeling as bad anymore. We went to the courtyard, and then to get lunch. Charlotte and Magali didnât try to beat me or make me fall. Nicole and the other girls smiled at me when I looked at them, and, in the afternoon, we had sports.
I was good at sports. I thanked my old friends in silence. The fact that Iâve always hanged out with bigger tougher boys made it pretty easy for me to be as aggressive as sports demanded.
We played rugby. Coach Gabriella was there, and she said:
âSavannah, since your team won basketball last time, this time you can choose again.â
I immediately looked at Nicole and the others that were friendly towards me. Victoria, Melissa. I was starting to memorize the names. We were at a grass court, next to the fences, and I was cheering for the ball to fly through it. Imagine if they let us go get it. I would run away, for sure.
I looked at Nicole and told her to come to my team. I looked around the field and saw that it had a big billboard written âThe future is bright, regardless of the past.â And: âBy our sponsors,â I looked at Phoenix, but he was paying attention to Jackâs jokes, like a puppy. I was sure that his dad had helped to build this field too.
The other team was chosen by a girl called Joana. She got Caroline, the small girl that was the captain of the basketball team when we played last time, but I didnât understand why she would do that, since Caroline didnât seem really prepared for a rugby game. Then, I chose Kaylah, the big one that also hated Charlotte. She celebrated in place and we exchanged a high-five.
We went on choosing people, and the thing that made me smile the most was the fact that Charlotte was one of the last to be chosen.
The game started in a little time after that. I went on first as quarterback and Nicole was behind me to get the ball. The girl in front of me, the other quarterback, was Melissa, a blond girl with big blue eyes. The Coach whistled, I threw the ball to Nicole from below my legs. She grabbed it, but everyone started to go for her.
