Chapter 10. Niels

After the first day of hard work, all my body was sore. Stupid Jones sat there, watching us. The “team” was a bunch of useless guys that were profiting from the school’s money without actually doing anything. They just told us to clean the ground while they would prune the plants. But most of the time they just stayed there talking to each other, without actually doing real work, while Catherine and I had to do the hard work.

I felt like killing someone. I wanted to part that rake in two. And I should’ve gotten gloves. My hands started getting red and full of blisters. I looked at Catherine’s gloves, jealous. I couldn’t believe I was stupid enough to have forgotten mine.

“Can I go back to the shed to get some gloves?” I asked Jones. He smirked again like it was the best day of his life. Asshole.

“Not now. You’ll have a break in a few hours where you’ll be able to get it.”

“Hours?!” I screamed.

“The patio won’t build itself, you know,” he said and yawned. I rolled my eyes, feeling the anger.

I kept working in the middle of the mud, full of the insects, and the blisters on my hands. It was all fine. Everything just got unbearable when it started to pour down rain.

I looked up, cursing God. He could only be kidding. I looked at Catherine, who had stopped for a second too. We had already filled two bags of leaves. Jones didn’t seem to have noticed the rain. With his small brain, I wouldn’t doubt he actually hadn’t noticed it. He had his eyes closed, almost pretending to be asleep, but he opened it when one of the men in the team got near him.

“We’ll do a break because of the rain,” he said. Jones nodded.

“Certainly.”

I let out a sigh of relief and started following the man. I had no idea where the break room was, but anywhere would be better than there. However, Jones screamed:

“NIELS!”

I looked at his retired marine postured and hold back from rolling my eyes.

“What?”

“It’s ‘sir’ for you.”

“What, sir?” I said with all the sarcasm I could join in one single word. He didn’t seem to notice that either.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Well… to the breakroom… with the team,” I said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“It’s not your break. Go back to work,” he said.

“What?!”

“You heard me. It’s not your break. Back to work,” he said. I screamed in frustration and heard Catherine laughing. I couldn’t believe that.

“This is the worst day of my life,” I said while feeling the cold rain soaking all my clothes. I was getting wetter than if I had jumped in a pool. My hands were hurting, my back and shoulders were sore, and I was covered in mud. I looked at the woodland and it basically hadn’t changed a thing. We tried to weed it a bit, but it’s still had weeks’ worth of work. “I think I’ll die.
