chapter 2 4 ✪

* * *

Bridget couldn’t sleep. All she could think about was Gilbert. He had to be hiding at Eric’s ranch. Despite what the sheriff thought, all signs pointed to it. She wished the sheriff had believed her, but at least Sebastian had no doubts.

She tried to tell herself that Sebastian’s love and belief in her was enough, but it wasn’t. Gilbert had killed her brother, sister, and parents. Knowing that he was only a few miles away from her, probably sleeping in a warm, cozy bed, made her blood boil.

After another half hour of lying in bed no closer to sleep than when she’d started, she threw the covers back and sat up. A tiny, silly idea had crept into her mind a second ago, and it seemed stuck there.

It was a ridiculous idea, she knew that, but her brain just wouldn’t let it go. The more it spun around in there, the more she started to like it.

Earlier today, Sebastian had said the only way he would be able to stop Gilbert was if he stormed Eric’s ranch during the night and shot the jerk. She was paraphrasing slightly, but the sentiments were the same.

What if it wasn’t Sebastian who stormed Eric’s ranch home though? What if it was her?

Gilbert’s men were probably looking for Sebastian. He probably had guards all around Eric’s house just for that very reason. But had Gilbert told them to keep a lookout for her? She doubted it. A man like Gilbert would never see her as a threat.

Of course, there was no way Sebastian would ever let her do something so dangerous. But then, Sebastian was asleep in the other room. Most of his guns were in there with him, but she still had the Colt Walker he’d given her before.

What if she snuck up to Eric’s ranch and found Gilbert? She could shoot him tonight and this would all be over and done with. Sheriff Keller would have no choice but to believe her when he was presented with Gilbert’s dead body.

What’s more, there was a reward on Gilbert’s head. She could collect the bounty on him and use some of it to repay Sebastian back for his kindness. The rest she could use to start a new life for herself; maybe Sebastian would want to start over with her.

But before any of that was possible, she had to kill Gilbert.

Bridget dressed quickly and stepped quietly into the hall. She pressed her ear to Gilbert’s door, listening to see if she could hear any movement, but she heard nothing.

In the living room, one of the floorboards creaked. She held her breath but Gilbert’s door never opened, so she continued for the front door. Halfway there, as she was crossing through the living room, she caught a flash of movement.

She almost screamed but managed to bite down on it, grateful she had when she realized it was Sebastian she’d seen. He was sprawled out on the couch. She wished she’d known he was going to sleep out here.
