Chapter Seventeen

The bar was right down the road from Jorie’s house and had a patio. It was more of an eatery but more docile than the hump night celebrations that went on in regular clubs. Lena had hoped that Jorie would’ve taken her to a lesbian bar, so she could get an idea of what it was like. But the patio was nice and heated to ward off the evening chill that still hung around in late January.

Lena sipped her vodka and cranberry juice, desperately seeking courage. One, possibly two was her limit if the bartender was stingy with the liquor, but she feared it would take a whole lot more than that to be able to utter the words she so desperately wanted to. Her heart pounded with fear of rejection.

“What’re you thinking about?” Jorie asked.

“I’m not being good company, am I? My mind is sort of wandering tonight, I’m sorry.”

“I’ve enjoyed your company very much. I was kind of sad when we got back to New Orleans and life resumed as normal,” Jorie admitted with a slight smile. “You’re fun to talk to.”

“I think the same about you.” Lena watched as the only other people on the patio got up and left. It was the perfect time. She sipped her drink, trying to figure out a way to broach the subject.

“I was so surprised when you showed up at the office the other day. I’d enjoyed my time with you, but I didn’t know if…well…I didn’t know if you’d found it as enjoyable.” Jorie blew out a breath and stared up at the night sky.

“Very much. It was life-altering, you might say.” Lena clenched her fist beneath the table. “I…have been having a lot of thoughts…about you.” She took another drink and swallowed it with a gulp. “To be honest, I hate horror movies. I was just trying to think up an excuse to have you go out with me and not sound like a loser who couldn’t find anyone to see a movie with. Wait, that didn’t come out right. I wanted to see you again.” Lena was relieved that Jorie continued to look at the stars. “I…like you, maybe a little more than I should.”

Jorie’s head lowered slowly, and a small smile creased her lips. “I’m not alone?”

Relief swept over Lena so swiftly she sagged deeper into her chair. “I was so afraid you wouldn’t take that well.”

“I hate going to the movies,” Jorie said with a laugh. “And just so you know, my eyes were closed through half the thing we just watched. I’m gonna have nightmares just because of the few snippets I did see.” She laughed softly. “I like you, too, and I’ve been sitting here trying to work up the courage to tell you that.”

Lena chuckled for a second, then it turned into a rolling laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“I’m just so damned relieved.” Lena bit her bottom lip. “I don’t know how to identify myself. I’ve never really been attracted to another woman until now.
