Chapter 18
Mick
Consequences
Being a nurse exposes you first hand to the results of speed, drunk driving and many other poor choices people seem to make. So many lives are destroyed and those of their families in the process. It may cause you to really appreciate life to the full.
The young man named Jack sat quietly in the corner of the ICU cubicle nursing a cold cup of coffee in a Styrofoam cup. He was the best friend of the Mick, the patient I was caring for that shift. He had been at the pub with Mick the night of the accident and recounted the last events leading up to it. He just couldn’t understand how it had happened and tortured himself trying to speculate. He told how Mick loved to open up the throttle a little too much.
‘See ya later mate’, Mick said as he took one last swig of his pint and stood up to leave.
‘Are you coming out later’? said Jack
‘No, I’m taking Jenny out and we’re going back to hers. Tonight’s the night. See ya tomorrow sometime’, said Mick
‘Good on ya mate, she’ll say yes’, said Jack
The girls standing at the bar all locked their eyes on Mick as he walked out of the pub. He was six foot tall, had dark thick hair, and movie-star looks. His physique showed off his love of sport and keeping fit. He wore faded jeans, a blue t-shirt, and his leather riding jacket with his desert army boots.
It was Friday afternoon, and Mick tore up the highway in his new Harley-Davidson motorcycle he had just bought a month before. The engine purred, and he loved the way it hummed as it idled when he stopped at the lights. He had been in the Army at the Barracks for the past three years, and life was good. He had saved hard for two years to buy this bike. Jenny was going to love the surprise of being picked up in it. He had just finished work and was going to take her for a spin up Castle Hill and then to Pallarenda beach to watch the sunset.
He had a bottle of Moet and they would stop and bring some take-away with them from somewhere. He made sure the helmet was on the back for Jenny. She was a real safety freak, and wouldn’t even get on the bike until she had it secured firmly on her head. He laughed to himself at the look on her face when he had given her a ride for the first time. Her face was lit up like a Christmas tree and she was so excited she had asked him if they could go again. He knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He checked his pocket and fingered the ring. He would ask her tonight.
The road was hot and the mirage of heat waves appeared in the distance as he gunned the engine. He couldn’t resist and had to let it out before he picked up Jenny.
