Hot air could also be drawn into the rear of in-row air units. These units are connected to chilled water or refrigerant systems. Chiller distribution units move the liquid to external chiller or cooling components for heat rejection.
Figure 27. Cold Aisle Containment
The opposite principle is cold aisle containment (CAC) above. In this case, the cold aisle is the corridor allowing cold air to circulate to the top of the cabinet positions. Hot air discharges to the room. Room units or in-row cooling units supply the cold air.
As a side note, it is crucial to design the fire suppression systems so that the entire room (including under any containment ceiling) has coverage by suppression. Aisle ceilings can break away, retract, or additional suppression heads are needed. In some cases, cabinets contain in-cabinet fire suppression. In all cases of fire suppression, the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) should be included, as sometimes local ordinances go above and beyond the National Building Codes and National Electrical Code. Failures to either code can result in a denial of a certificate of occupancy, fines, or both.
Itâs always a good idea to check the manufacturersâ specifications to ensure you can reject the right amount of heat for your environment. In some cases, data centers operate multiple solutions, one for high-density areas and the other for lower-density areas. Some colocation facilities will have manufacturer-specific requirements for what types (and, in some cases, manufacturers) can be installed in their data halls. Rigid specifications are limiting factors with design constraints.
For colo environments, the facility engineering outlines detailed power ratings used for sales and ongoing management purposes. Operating outside of these specs requires additional engineering and coordination and time. Leasing for data halls may include an entire suite/hall. Leasing may be for smaller areas generally configured in cages acting as mini data halls. In some cases, colocation facilities will lease out portions of racks.
