Chapter 12

Vivian

We walked through a tent that didn’t hold anything but a flight of stairs down into the ground. There was a loud roaring coming from the stairs. It was faint but the ground trembled under my feet. Chyn went down, and I stopped. Gus wouldn’t fit down those stairs. I looked back at him.

“No one will bother the Zythen,” Hector said behind me.

I jumped and whirled around, gaping at him. That was the most I had heard from him since seeing his face again for the first time. Even his voice was different. His accent gone. Never again would I hear mi princesa. Mi amor. Mi vida. I blinked and looked at my bloody feet. My Hector was gone.

I walked to the stairs in a daze.

Gus roared and tried to follow. Hector looked at him coldly. “Stay.”

Gus whined and looked to me. “It’s okay,” I whispered. Gus trembled but sat down, watching me.

I hesitantly moved back to the stairs.

“A-are you sure he’ll be okay?” I managed thickly.

“The Heraterrans have seen him with us. He won’t be bothered.”

I nodded slowly, unable to comprehend his new voice. His new accent.

At the bottom of the stairs was a large arena. I stopped and backed into Hector—Vyr—and gawked at the thousands of aliens cramped in the space. It was so loud, I couldn’t hear my panicked breaths. Someone was yelling through a microphone or something, and aliens were shouting and cheering as they faced the middle of the room. We were at the top of the arena, facing down into a pit.

Vyr’s hands curled around my waist, and he walked me forward. I looked through a group of aliens and down into the pit as we passed. Several aliens were down there, clearly fighting. They had weapons of all kinds: blades, clubs, hammers with spikes. I looked away as one alien bashed his hammer into the side of another. Cheers broke out.

Chyn was across from us, talking to an insectoid alien. Vyr steered us around the crowd until we were behind Chyn. The insect alien watched me hungrily but Chyn glared until it looked away. Then Chyn nodded toward a door, and we followed him inside. We walked down a long hall before we came to another door. Chyn opened it and strolled inside.

I gasped when I saw the alien lounging in a chair. It was the one that had bought Ferhen. He had a trunk like an elephants and pale pink skin. He was very large and had tiny little beady eyes. He was sitting with an alien between his legs.

I couldn’t tell that one’s gender, only that it was humanoid and very snake-like in appearance. Its green skin was scaly all over, and it had a smooth head. It wore long robes and had legs but also a tail that curled and whirled along the ground. The alien looked up from the elephant alien’s legs, and I gaped at its eyes. It had a flat mouth and blue gems where eyes would be.
