These questions will help you decide whether or not you want to work with a prospective client, but you can also look for specific red flags. I recommend gently releasing clients from the call if they display any of the following traits.
Victim Mentality
A victim mentality is a big red flag. I know that when a potential client is blaming their mother, their spouse, their finances, or their boss for their problems, Iâll be the next one on their list.
When I hear blaming, my mind stops. Then I ask thoughtful questions designed to show me how deeply this habit of blaming goes. Is a victim mentality a deeply rooted problem in their lives, or are they able to shrug it off when lightly challenged? To find out, I typically ask them to share more about their complaints and inquire as to what theyâve done to improve the situation. If theyâve done nothing, what do they think needs to be done? If they continue to blame others and never take responsibility, or if they arenât committed to creating a shift, I will gently release them from the call. Trust yourself in this situation. Trust the signals your brain sends to you, and donât work with a misaligned client. Ever.
One final note here. âYou donât know what you donât know,â and the only way to learn is to âfail your way forward.â Youâre going to mess up, and occasionally, youâll enroll misaligned clients. Forgive yourself and send them back into the universe with love and gratitude for the gift they provided to you: a lesson learned.
