One day soon after she joined the Daisies, Joyce was practicing throwing the ball to second base from her catcher s position behind home plate. One of her teammates, Faye Dancer, was told to stand at home plate and pretend to be the batter. She was told not to swing at the ball. Since Faye wasn’t supposed to swing, it seemed safe for Joyce not to wear a catcher’s mask. But Faye decided to take a slow, easy swing to make it look like a real game. When the pitcher threw the ball to home plate, Faye swung. The ball was tipped, and it hit Joyce right in the face. Joyce’s nose was broken, and she wound up with 2 black eyes. Joyce knew this was an accident, and she and Faye eventually became good friends.

A few days later when Joyce began to play again, she broke her finger. Because of this, Joyce didn’t play in any games during her 2 weeks on the Fort Wayne Daisies.
