I let the water absorb into the brush and then began to brush the same way I would on Earth.

“Now,” I said, talking as clearly as possible with a mouth full of toothpaste, “I can’t spit out the toothpaste like I would on Earth.”

“You swallow it!” Cozzie said gleefully.

“Eww!” the girls said at the same time.

“It’s special toothpaste,” I said. “You wouldn’t want to do that on Earth, but here on the station it’s the way we have to do it.”

The girls each took a turn brushing their teeth, and then we headed to the kitchen to meet Dad.

“This isn’t like my kitchen on Earth,” Val said.

“You’re right,” Dad said. “But we do have some of the things that you have on Earth, such as a microwave. Most of the foods we have are prepackaged for us and we can heat them up.”

“Eating in space can be really challenging,” I said. “Foods float away all the time and can become really messy. One time I was eating chicken and I got distracted. I found it a few days later floating in one of the tubes.”

Dad said, “Every time Cozzie eats, something seems to float away.”

“Watch this,” I said, taking out a bowl and letting it float in front of me. Then I opened a container of cereal and attempted to pour the cereal into the bowl. It floated away from the bowl.

“That’s so weird!” Monique exclaimed.

“What should we do?” Val asked.

“Eat the cereal!” Cozzie shouted. He floated forward and gobbled up as many pieces of cereal as he could.

The girls and I joined in. I realized it was the first time in a while that I’d played with kids other than my brothers. I felt really thankful to have the girls on board. Also, Val was really good at catching flying cereal!
