Pranayama Breathing Exercises

This is a perfect time to introduce the fundamental and essential practice of pranayama. This is the fourth part in the Ashtanga “eight-limb” system described by Patanjali in 150 BCE (see this page for the other parts).

Breath is your link to life, the direct connection to your spirit. It is upon this awareness that the entire system of Pranashama Yoga is based. Calming the mind and connecting with breath, we can move beyond the dual nature of our lives into a unified field, a non-dual current of unconditional love and joy. This is the gateway to accessing the Bliss Channel. Additionally, conscious awareness and the ability to control the breath will increase your energy levels naturally, improve your sleeping patterns, and detoxify your lungs (along with many other benefits).

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning literally “restraint of the prana or breath.” The word is composed of two parts: prana, life force or vital energy, particularly, the breath; and ayama, to suspend or restrain. It is often translated as “control of the life force.” Pranayama is breathwork with intention upon the subtle connection between body and spirit. The breath is regulated and controlled through the practice of breathing exercises. The duration of inhalation, retention, and exhalation of breath is regulated with the aim of strengthening and cleansing the nervous system and increasing a person’s source of life energy. Pranayama practice also makes the mind calmer and more focused.

Pranayama is a powerful tool and the techniques may result in rapid emotional release or even fainting, among other potential effects. However, to say there are contraindications for each and every pranayama practice is like saying that there is a contraindication for breathing and for connecting to your spirit. I recommend you start slow. Guidance by an experienced teacher is important to ensure optimal results.

Pranayama is a vitally essential inclusion into the Pranashama Yoga system. A few of the most commonly shared techniques include:
