IT WAS SOME, oh quite some time later that I sat up as an idea began to formulate in my mind. “Finn!”

“Hmmm?” he answered as he pulled me back into his arms and kissed my forehead. “Speak, ye, and tell me how ye want it now, for I am a willing fellow.”

I laughed and pushed my hand against his chest to stop him.

He raised a brow. “Where is the lass who told me she just can’t get enough?”

Finn moves me in ways I can’t explain. My body reacts to him without my consent, but a notion had taken hold of my thoughts, and I needed him to listen.

“Wait, Finn … no. No …” I scurried away from his touch, pulled the covers up to my neck, and told him as forcefully as I could, “Finn, this is important. Tell me—how large is the Argle army?”

He sat up beside me, his beautiful brows drawn together. I stared at his chest, and my tongue moved across my lips. I threw some of the quilt over him and repeated, “How large, Finn?”

“Not large,” he said thoughtfully, as though trying to discern where I was going with this line of questioning. “Why?”

“Don’t you see? Their army—the Argle army—isn’t big enough to face the queen and her Rowan command,” I told him and, damn, I knew what this suggested to me. I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts. I knew, just knew, the solution was there, in the answer to my question.

Revolution is something they have been whispering about for centuries, but the queen has them under her thumb because of the numbers of her army.” He sighed. “The military is loyal to her, Riley, because she is wise enough to show them respect and allow them some power. She awards many of the high-ranking leaders who hold their warriors’ loyalty with a great deal of property and honors. I suspect none know or understand what she really is. But even if they did, I also suspect they would turn a blind eye.” He shrugged. “Why wouldn’t they? She makes certain their lives are comfortable.”

“That doesn’t matter. I don’t care if they are loyal, and neither do the Argles. They have no intention of facing her army … not in the way you think.”

“Then what are ye saying?”

“Here it is, Finn. The Argle army isn’t large enough to take on the queen and her Rowan army. You said the other night that they would be committing suicide to go against the Rowan army, so I put it to you that they have no intention of facing her army down.”

“Aye, I agree. We already know that is where the humans come in. We know that is why they want to conquer this realm and hand it over to the council in exchange for her execution. Here they can,
