Three weeks. Three fucking weeks of watching Emily practice with the cheer squad. Tonight’s the first game she’ll be at. I can tell by her body language that she’s nervous as hell about the performance. Yet that damn fake-as-shit smile is plastered on her face.

Thank fuck this will be over after tonight. I won’t have to worry about all the fucking idiots at this school seeing her in that uniform. Why the girls agree to wear shit that doesn’t do a damn thing about covering them, I have no idea. But I’ll make damn sure Emily won’t be prancing around in it again.

At the end of the game, I watch the coach walk up to the cheer squad. He points to Emily and says something. She scans the crowd, like she’s looking for someone. Then she shakes her head, straightens her shoulders, and walks off the field.

I follow her to her car. She doesn’t show anything until she shuts herself in her crappy compact and cries. Fuck, I made her fucking cry. I want to open the door and comfort her, be the shoulder she can cry on, but that won’t do me or her any good. She’s strong. She’ll get over this by the end of the week. I watch her wipe the tears off her face, then put her car into reverse and drive away. I don’t understand what I’m feeling right now, but I don’t like it. I want to take it all back. I want her to not be fucking crying.

I bring my palm up to rub at my aching chest. Am I having a heart attack at sixteen? Fuck, I hope not.
