In the Mountains

FROM NOW ON Muir constantly watched for the proof of icy glaciers on the mountains and in the valleys. He hiked through rocky canyons and past frothy waterfalls. He tramped through green meadows and beside cold mountain lakes. He walked up the rocky river beds of tumbling mountain streams. He looked sharply at each perfect flower and bush and tree. He was fascinated by the order of all nature’s parts, animals, growing plants and trees, rocks, streams, waterfalls, and mountains.

In searching for clues to prove his glacial theory, he looked carefully at each mountain rock and boulder. He measured heights and widths with great care. No unusual stripe or mark on a rock escaped his keen eye.

At night he slept under the stars. When the sun started to slip behind the canyon walls, he made his camp for the night. Usually he gathered wood chips and brown needles which had fallen from the pine trees to start a fire. He placed twigs and dry logs on top for firewood. Then when he lit the fire, the wood chips and needles crackled loudly and ignited the logs.

He dipped water from a rushing mountain stream and placed a dipper of water over the coals. He reached in his pocket, took out a few tea leaves, and put them in a tin cup. Then he poured the boiling water in the cup to make tea. Finally he sat down by the crackling fire and reached in his pocket and pulled out a crust of dry bread.

Regularly he sat with his back against a tree and his feet toward the fire. He sipped his tea and munched his bread by firelight. He felt fortunate to have the entire canyon as his dinning with beautiful surroundings.
